Hello from UCA

So this summer I'm doing a variety of projects that I feel I should document somewhere online so everyone doesn't think I've fallen of the face of the earth - right now I'm currently sat in my old house on campus, not going to lie it's very strange.

For the most part I'm working closely with marketing helping deliver some of the Summer school actives here in Farnham, making some videos along side my Vlogs for the UCA website, helping out with photography for some new marketing campaigns and helping shape the new ambassador scheme/team for the next academic year.

I've also been talking to marketing about possibly running some events in local feeder schools to give the students an idea of what filmmaking and arts education is like at degree level - which is all very exciting and actually quite interesting. My current thought is running a workshop surrounding video poetry, giving the students a poem or a piece of music they have to think about whilst working. Then giving them a quick overview of camera work (probably using a DSLR as these students will be around 14-16 years) and sending them off onto campus to get footage they believe represents the work that's been given to them. Then in the afternoon giving them a quick tour of Premiere and seeing what they come up with. But any other ideas I'd love to hear because the quicker this event forms the easier it will be to execute.

Whilst all of this was happening I also got put forward for a filming job via marketing for a youth centre here in Farnham. They are hosting their summer festival in the coming weeks and needed a one-person-film crew to come along and conduct some interviews for a case study to use as feedback/marketing for their trustees and anyone they approach to help fund their cause. This all takes me back to first year documentary but I'm surprisingly calm about it all. I've managed to get some very nice equipment from stores to help make it as marketable and presentable as possible as this is a very charity that not only need the money but they deserve it too.

But UCA aside for a second I've also been working on a project for a company called Seeper Arts an organisation, that I feel personally, sums up the DFSA ethos. I tweeted them out of the blue after discovering their website asking if they had any internships available and they replied saying they don't really offer them but to send my CV, website etc over to them and they'll take a look. Later that week I got an email back explaining that they are willing to offer me an internship in which I can pitch multiple ideas at them, they pick their favourite and then they'll facilitate me making said project. On the condition it produces an interesting behind the scenes video for their website. Which I'm all for.

I'm trying to keep it relevant to this summer in particular as I believe that will be the best marketing technique for the company (and maybe improve my chances of them liking the idea). So I'm back working on Shakespeare as it's currently the 400th anniversary and the Olympics/Paralympics as soon that will be all over our TV screens.

Medium wise I do want to branch out a bit and venture into some territory I'm planning on using for a final year project, so using this opportunity as a way to experiment before term starts up again. But that seems terrifying so I may tone it back a bit from holograms (I'm not crazy I just sound it) and venture more towards projection mapping something I know Seeper work with often. Seeper Arts as a company thrive on interactivity within their work and I'm afraid that as of now I'm not that well versed in it which is something I hope to pick up on. You know, if they accept any of my pitches.

For now I'm going to go back to work for a week or so, working on these projects whenever I have some free time, then hopefully dive straight back into them once Summer School season is over.

Also made a website a few weeks ago www.rachelbramley.com - thought I'd put that out there too.

OK. Bye.

My new Vlog is up and I give first years all the advice I can think of which coincidentally adds up to 10 Tips. Also I added captions to this video so more people can enjoy it!

So you have 24 hours to apply to University

This month I have been working with the marketing department to write an article and create a video counterpart surrounding Clearing and A Level Results day. It's been very interesting and caused few debates over how honest a writer should be about a situation, but it's finished and available to read here.

Plus the vlog can be seen here!

(I also learnt the hard way that filming late in the day and using natural light can cause problems that even colour correction can't fix!)

A Week in The Life of a DFSA Student

So for my Vlog this month (I had all good intentions of it going live in January, things happen....) I brought my camera to class with me and gave potential students a overview of what DFSA does in a week. The caption? 'How do you describe the course that does everything? In Short? You don't. You show them.' So here it is.....

Also let's use this as proof that I do actually do work? OK.

I forgot to post this here back when it was published before Christmas, I did a vlog on what I did in November including the Creative Challenge Residential in Le Harve. Enjoy!

A Sneak Preview

So as I mentioned in my I feel Old post I am now a video blogger for UCA and after fighting with the sun for a while my first video is finally uploaded to my Youtube channel! Now this doesn't officially get published by the University for another couple of days but I thought I'd put it up here a bit earlier.

Not the best thumbnail I know but it could be worse!

The internet isn’t as safe as it used to be. A rant on Feminism.

I live my life through the internet, there isn’t a day that I don’t check Tumblr/Twitter/Youtube so I’m constantly surrounded by people who have made a living off those websites, meaning they have a rather large fanbase but no real team around them, it’s just them.  Now I have always believed being in complete control of your own work on the internet is by far the best thing however in light of recent events I’ve began to reconsider.

Tom Milsom
Mike Lomardo
Since March 2014 stories about famous Youtubers abusing their position as role models for young fans have surfaced for 20 different people. This is outrageous and it’s starting to hit closer and close to home.

1 Tom Milsom
Accusation: Raping his 15 year old girlfriend when he was 22

2 Mike Lombardo
Accusation: Abusive in a relationship

Alex Day
3 Alex Day
Accusation: Abusive in a relationship, approaching underage girls, non consensual sexual advances

Josh Macdeo
4 Josh Macedo
Accusation: Non consensual sexual advances on underage girls

Kelly Montoya
5 Kelly Montoya
Accusation: Rape and sexual abuse

6 Danny Hooper
Accusation: Rape of 15 year old girl
Danny Hooper

Alex Carpenter
7 Alex Carpenter
Accusation: Non consensual sexual advances on a 16 year old girl, he was 25.

8 Adam Roach
Accusation: Underage sexual abuse, she was 15 he was 22.

Luke Conard
9 Luke Conard
Accusation: Abusive underage relationship, 7 year age gap

The list goes on…..

Recently Sam Pepper and Jason (VeeOneEye) have been ‘outed’ as rapists and sexual abusers but the difference with these guys are, they tried to cover it up.

Sam Pepper

Sam Pepper made a video where he went around London pinching women’s butts for a ‘prank’, this caught the Youtube communities attention to the point people realised that his past videos (which include lassoing women in the street, forcing women to kiss him on the beach) are also sexual abuse. Sam Pepper however tried to cover it up by saying the entire thing was staged and proceeded to upload 2 extra to parts to his latest video, a behind the scenes film and a vlog in which he explains the entire thing was to highlight MALE sexual harassment. However it seems to be brilliant timing that these two videos appeared after the Youtube community had already blacklisted him.  When Youtube Feminist Laci Green posted an open letter to Sam Pepper she instantly got a huge 100,000 strong following including Youtube big names Hank and John Green. This then made Sam Pepper threaten Laci about making a video on the subject, which she thankfully did anyway.

VeeOneEye

With Jason VeeOneEye he acknowledged that what he did (as described in a video by a victim, Animagas) however he used his Mormon (Seen here in his unlisted, non advertised appology video) upbringing and social awkwardness as an excuse and still tried to act as he did nothing wrong.  However more and more people started coming forward with accusations of rape and sexual advances

Both Sam and Jason now have court cases against them and have been dropped by their Youtube Label.

Personally this hit home for me when a Youtuber I look up too a lot Evan Edinger uploaded a video in which he broke down because he was very good friends with Jason and had done nothing about the things he was doing.  Now I am very much aware that he is not a victim but something I want to bring to light is how people who manipulate people sexually also manipulate those around them.

Now this is about Feminism honest, I am so proud of the self proclaimed Feminists on Youtube standing up for what it right and blacklisting these people from what is essentially a very safe and loving community. Feminists (who seem to be the only social group talking) on Youtube and other social networking sites, who are ENGAGING IN THE CONVERSATION, have been getting hate from Youtube fans who don’t want to believe their idols are flawed or who, sadly, don’t see a problem in what they have done.

Personally I have received a lot of hate on the topic but I am in no way ashamed of talking about it and I can’t sing the praises of the big Youtubers who are also engaging in the conversation, at the possible price of their fanbase, enough. Taking about it is the only way it will be fixed and I urge everyone to learn and listen too as many people as possible on the topic.

A personal favourite, Consent, a Youtube music video by Comedy Duo OMFGit'sJackandDean

More video’s have been created by big name Youtubers on the topic

Video: Lex made a video about what CONSENT means.
Video: Hank Green made a video about CONSENT.
Video: The Science and Dangers of YouTube Celebrity.
Video: TomSka’s Guide to Gatherings.
Video: Charlie McDonnell: Sex & Consent.
Video: Bryarly Bisop: We Are Edited.
Video: Laci Green: Consent 101.

Now this isn’t a fun post but it was a post I was going to write anyway on my personal blog and I decided the more platforms this is seen on the better - it's also happened to be something that happened in September!

If you would like to read more, there is a Tumblr master post listing links to every accusation, acknowledgement, apology and video here.
